March Update from Best Buddies Nevada's High School Program

Best Buddies Nevada's High Schools Program is as busy as ever! With 15 high school chapters and over 190 friendships, Best Buddies is spreading its mission to our youth on these campuses everyday.

March is Best Buddies Month, and all of the high school chapters have been hard at work planning activities, fundraisers, and awareness events to spread the word about our organization on their campuses and in the community.

Thirteen Best Buddies' High School Chapters kicked off the month by participating in the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, which was designed to raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word “retard(ed)” and encourage people to pledge to stop using the R-word. Over 1,000 signatures were signed by high school students in the Las Vegas community.

In honor of Best Buddies Month, Bonanza High School held a Best Buddies Awareness Week filled with lunch time activities such as: twin day, disability awareness outreach, and sharing the BB video during their morning school TV announcements.

Foothill High School will share in the Best Buddies mission this month by hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on their campus on March 13 for all participants, friends, and family of BBNV.

BBNV will be looking for high school chapter leaders during the month of March to interview for the 2010-11 school year. If you have a Best Buddies on your campus and are interested in becoming a chapter leader, please contact High Schools Program Manager, Krysti Gabriel at krystigabriel@bestbuddies.org for an application and more information.

To close Best Buddies Month, BBNV will host the Festival of Friendship and Friendship Walk and each high school has created a walk team. To register to walk with one of these schools please go to www.bestbuddiesnevada.org/walk!
